Drawing the Teacher’s Home July 31, 2007

Materials: paper and pencils, a floor plan for each student, a large diagram of the teacher’s home to place on the board afterwards, photos of the house?

The students listen to a description of the teacher’s home and draw in the items on their floor plan.

Afterwards, the teacher pins up the large copy of the actual floorplan with items so the students can compare theirs with the actual one. Note any differences in assumptions based on the different cultures?

Materials: signs to post

This person…

placed a series of signs leading from my classroom with instructions like “Go down the stairs, and turn left” or “Take the second right”. There were a few false trails to make things interesting (both loops or dead ends). Let students go at spaced intervals, then meet them at the finish line.
It is easy to include some prepositions as well… or get them to perform a specific task.

Imitate the Photo July 25, 2007

Materials: photos

Split the students into teams. Choose the appropriate number of students as are in the photo to go to the front. Show the remaining students the photo. They have to tell their group to get into the position of the people/animals in the photo. They can’t go up to the students, just tell them from their seat. Prizes go to students with the closes pose. Review vocabulary: body parts, left/right. Up/down, forward/backward/ stop, a little, out/in, straight/bend.

Materials: Colored chalk or colored paper

Tape/draw colors on board. Call out a color. The first student from each group lines up, has to run to touch the color.
