Materials: A whole bunch of food cards. A bunch. / 5-6 different shopping lists, + 5-6 matching, but mixed-up, shop inventories. / Play money.

Make sure you know how many students are in the class beforehand so you can prepare enough lists.

Divide students into 5-6 groups, then split in half. Half students are shopkeepers, half are shoppers. Teach the students “Hello! May I help you?” / “One apple, please” / “2 dollars” / “Here you are” / “Thank you!”

Set up 5-6 desks at one end of room, and place shopkeepers there with their food cards (can give them the cards on your lists, and they don’t really need the shop inventories – it confused my students anyway).

Give shopper groups their lists along with a pencil to mark off items, plus money for each shopper.

RULES: The shopper groups must take turns, or delegate who will get which item. For example, Kenji goes to get the 3 apples while Yuki looks for the 2 peppers, etc. When everyone is assembled, say “START!” and the shoppers begin their quest.

This worked well for me with 5th – 6th graders who are more interested in carrying out tasks than having a crazy fun time yelling English. They enjoyed being able to complete the task without much compet
