A great, great way for kids to compete as a class by pairing up “around the world”. Basically, you start at one end and two students compete with flashcards, questions, greetings, janken math, anything. The student who wins gets to move forward to the next student, while the loser sits down… Go to this activity »

One way to practice vocabulary, as well as listening (at the end) is to use Mad Libs as a warm-up or wrap-up activity!
Here are some ideas on how to use Mad Libs in the classroom:
Dave’s ESL Cafe: Mad Libs – Extremely Funny Stories!!!
Dave’s ESL Cafe: Mad Libs for Advanced Learners (includes an example)
Suite 101: Vocabulary Word Game (ideas on different ways to use Mad Libs)
Here are some links I found:
Jerem Taylor: Writer – Teacher – Juggler
Six downloadable Mad Lib Stories by level
John’s ESL Community: Weblibs
Web-based stories
Education Place – Wacky Web Tales
Aimed at kids grade 3 and above, and based on web use, but good ideas.
Lychee Boba – ESL Worksheets (contains a link to PDF Mad Libs worksheets on the site)

A fun way to practice all the different ways we express our emotions through facial expressions! Students make a poster of the various emotions in English, then use pictures of themselves to illustrate! A great idea. Go to this activity »

From Three Wise Monkeys
Aims: occupations / what do you want to be? / other
Materials: game cards with 10-12 pictures of different occupations, a set of 3 for each student.
Ex:
To play: students find a partner and ‘Jan-ken’; the winner is Student ‘A’, the other is student ‘B’.
‘A’: “I want to be a farmer.” (They must use one of their cards), “Do you want to be a farmer?”
‘B’: “Yes, I do. I want to be a farmer, too.” (‘B’ surrenders their card to ‘A’).
or
“No, I don’t. I don’t want to be a farmer.” (No card is lost or won)
Jump-roping July 30, 2007

Aims: Any / Vocabulary
Materials: jump ropes, examples, music?
Students take turns jump-roping to English phrases. They chant in rhythm, if they don’t, they’re out.
Example:
“My name is [A...] , I come from [a...], and I like [a...] .”
“My name is [B...], I come from [b...], and I like [b...].”
THOUGHTS: Try using music? At the junior high level, this likely needs a pretty motivating and enthusiastic teacher!
